A Brief History
The FSU Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) has taken many forms over years, beginning in 2004 with the FSU Collection and Recycling Program. This program involved students from four service learning courses and students from a variety of organizations in the planning and implementation of an effort to expand recycling on campus.
At the same time, Tri-Eagle Sales, Inc was sponsoring
the TAKE PRIDE and PITCH IN campaigns at our home football games. Tailgate
fans were encouraged to recycle their beverage containers, put litter
in its place, and celebrate safely and responsibly.
In 2005, a partnership between Tri-Eagle Sales, Inc and the FSU Center
for Civic Education & Service (now the Center for Leadership & Civic
Education) was formed to take the football program to the next level - Garnet
& Gold Goes Green! In 2006, the program implemented recycling
at sporting events.
Also in 2006, the initiative grew to include more FSU students, faculty,
and staff and the Strategic Planning Group was formed to act as the
steering committee for events, educational programming, and service
projects. The program continued to grow throughout 2006 and 2007,
hosting events such as the Rez Goes Green and Earth Day. In October
of 2007, we partnered with the Council for Sustainable Florida
to host Getting to GREEN, the 2nd Annual Campus & Community Sustainability
Conference.
Today, the SCI is steered by the Strategic Planning Group (SPG). The SPG has developed a mission statement and set of goals that reflect educating the campus community about sustainability and continue looking for opportunities to make sustainability more mainstream at FSU.
