Meet Taylor, The Eco-Reps Coordinator

Eco-Reps

As part of our Campus Sustainability month, we want to introduce you to our outstanding sustainable student leaders. Meet Taylor, the current Eco-Reps Coordinator. She is a senior double majoring in Biology & Editing, Writing, and Media. This is Taylor's fourth year with Eco-Reps. One of Taylor's proudest sustainability accomplishments is maintaining a balcony garden at her home and caring for a small army of fish!

When did you first get involved with Eco-Reps and why?

I was first Eco-Rep for Landis Hall Council and my roommate freshman year thought I would be a good Eco-Rep and they were actually the one who suggested I apply.

How long have you been with Eco-Reps?

This is my 4th year with Eco-Reps. I was an Eco-Rep for Landis Hall my first year, then was on the second year leadership team as special projects chair, and I’ve been coordinating the program for the past two years.

How have you seen it evolve over the years?

I’ve seen Eco-Reps grow to work with other departments and campus groups! It used to be much more internal but we are still able to have our SC volunteer base even with partners like IRHC.

What are your goals for the Eco-Reps program this year?

My goal is to increase membership by encouraging non-elected Eco-Reps to join the program this year and we’ve seen a big jump in members!

What is your favorite part about being the Eco-Reps program coordinator?

My favorite part of being Eco-Reps coordinator is the ability to show students sustainability is more than being “green”.

What have you learned during your time with Eco-Reps?

I have learned that there is a growing need for programs like Eco-Reps on college campuses to teach students skills like recycling and ethical purchasing. These aren’t things you’re typically taught in school so Eco-Reps is a way for students to learn about subjects they wouldn’t otherwise.

What is one thing you want students to know about Eco-Reps and sustainability at FSU?

The one thing I want students to know is Eco-Reps meetings are open to all! Even if you’re just curious, I encourage everyone to come to a meeting :) oh and SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS IS IN MENDENHALL 110 RIGHT NEXT TO EINSTEIN’S COME SAY HI TO US WE LOVE VISITORS!

In residence halls and around campus, Eco-Reps can be seen interacting with and educating students about sustainability and green living. The Eco-Reps are student ambassadors charged with increasing sustainable behaviors at Florida State University through peer-to-peer outreach and leadership. Inspiring others to take action to green their community, students involved in the Eco-Rep program host sustainability-themed programs, table at various campus events, and conduct food waste audits in the dining halls every semester.

If you’d like to connect with a group of environmentally- and socially-minded students, learn how to effectively communicate environmental messages, and make a difference in your residence hall, Eco-Reps is for you!
