We're celebrating fashion week this week with a sustainable twist! We asked the Sustainable Campus staff what they usually look for secondhand when they're shopping at thrift stores or secondhand sites like Poshmark, ThredUp, or Depop. Here's what the team had to say!

Emma:

"I make a point to love and mend the wardrobe I’ve already curated because the most sustainable fashion option is the thing you already own."

Jake:

"While secondhand shopping often has the connotation of “vintage” and “old” stuff, but when you’re looking for new clothes for interviews/jobs, check thrift stores first! I have found my entire set of work clothes at thrift stores and saved $100+ while doing it!"

Erin:

"I moved into a new house this year and quickly learned that new furniture is very expensive. Luckily, I came across two wood-framed couches at a local thrift store. I reupholstered them with some waterproof fabric and put a sealant on the wood and furnished my back porch for under $40!"

Michelle:

"I do a lot of hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. Fellow outdoor enthusiasts know that gear can be EXPENSIVE. However, there’s tons of opinions for buying gently used or “open box” gear that makes my favorite activities more accessible for me."

Tayah:

"I think that enhancing items you already own and love is the best upcycling tip! I love embroidering, cropping, or distressing clothes I already have and bringing new life to the piece."

Diana:

I love thrifting and supporting local tailors when I find the perfect piece that isn’t quite right. You never know what you’ll find in a thrift store so when you find that perfect piece, it’s worth it to spend that extra money getting it to fit perfectly all while supporting local businesses! - Diana
